Post partum sepsis: Post partum sepsis -- bloodstream infection following childbirth, usually streptococcal -- was a common life threatening problem before 150 years ago, but is rare today. It has become even rarer since obstetricians began routinely testing pregnant women for vaginal strep infection and treating it, if found, before labor. When it rarely happens, onset is within 2 days of delivery. No worries!
