Doctor can evaluate: On the right side are ribs, chest muscles, the right lung, and the lining of the lung (pleura). Nearby are the liver, gall bladder, esophagus, intestine, heart and arteries, etc... So, pain can originate from many places. Sometimes there is a problem in a part of the body a little farther away, but the nerves carrying the pain signals can "refer" pain to the right rib cage or right upper abdomen.
