Difference in people: Different people are different in their ear anatomy sizes, the angles of their eustachian tubes for ear drainage, their immunity to various viruses and bacteria, etc..., so one entire family can catch the same cold virus (or catch a variety of cold viruses) and the consequences can be NO bacterial additional infection or YES bacterial additional infection, such as a baby's ear infection.
