Time frame: Most upper respiratory infections start out as a viral infection. If the infection lasts longer than 7-10 days, then it usually is turning from a head cold or chest cold to a bacterial infection that could affect the sinuses, throat or bronchial airways. If your problem goes on for over a week, then you need to see your doctor again to consider antibiotics.

Viral infection: Clearly you have an upper respiratory infection but your doctor did not believe the source was bacterial based on your physical exam and presentation. You may also wish to ask your doctor as to his or her process on how you were diagnosed.
