Time frame: Most upper respiratory infections start out as a viral infection. If the infection lasts longer than 7-10 days, then it usually is turning from a head cold or chest cold to a bacterial infection that could affect the sinuses, throat or bronchial airways. If your problem goes on for over a week, then you need to see your doctor again to consider antibiotics.
