Must ask specialists: Multiple layers to consider here, but a medical school genetics clinic and high-risk obstetrics clinic can team up to give an opinion (that's where a couple can look). The first layer is whether or not a person with a major genetic condition should pass her gene on to the next generation. The desire to reproduce is strong, and babies are as cute as such decisions are hard and heart wrenching.
