Doctor can check: One's primary care doctor can evaluate mild urinary retention and discuss causes and treatments. A urologist may be needed. Severe urinary retention as a new symptom is an emergency. That means a person is making urine, his urine is going into his bladder, but he cannot pee. Thus, his bladder is getting bigger and bigger... and needs treatment in the ER. Middle-age prostate problems may exist.
