Excrutiating sharp pain in upper canine. xrays all normal but lingering sharp pain when endodontist tested tooth for cold sensitivity. he says possible infection behind filling i had 20 years ago. why do i need a root canal and not just antibiotics?

Antibiotics: Antibiotics will only resolve the symptoms, not the problem with the tooth. A deep filling can cause the nerve inside the tooth to die... leaving dead tissue to decay, release toxins, and irritate the bone around that tooth. Root canal therapy involves manually removing that dead tissue, something that antibiotics cannot do. Pain will only worsen without proper care. Endodontist can explain.
