Basics: Middle ear fluid is created as mucus on the walls of the middle ear. If the Eustachian tube is working it will allow this to drain into the throat & allow air to enter from the throat & remain in that space.If the tube is swollen or blocked throat germs can enter the tube & create infection. An ENT may need to put a tube/grommet in the drum to allow the space to dry & stop feeding germs.
