A member asked:

On toprol 25mg/day since june. systolic ranged 86 to 156, median in 120s. recently the range has narrowed 132 to 155, median mid-140s. what could be happening and should i call my md about it? why has med suddenly become ineffective?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Toprol: Beta blockers, like toprol, lower blood pressure mostly by slowing the heart rate and possibly by reducing the force of the heart contractions. In my opinion they are not first line choices unless we're dealing with someone who tends to run a fast heart rate. The side effect of fatigue is another problem. I'd recommend an ACE inhibitor or calcium channel blocker perhaps with a mid dose of diuretic
