Period headaches: Headaches can occur just before, during or just after menstrual periods and are felt to be caused by hormonal fluctuations. In my opinion, premenstrual tension and headaches just before periods may be caused or aggravated by fluid retention and I have seen prevention by taking a mild diuretic for a few days before the period. You shouldn't change your pill without guidance from your gynecologist.

Trial: Would suggest caution. It sounds like topamax works relatively well with the exception of few days when your headaches are not controlled. By replacing it you might lose its effect on most of the days. For any drug we use we look for a favorable benefit/ side effect ratio. Talk to your topamax prescriber about your concerns and remember you are looking for his or her professional advise.
