A member asked:

I was told many years ago by a ent that the hammer in my ear sticks. yesterday my dr. diagnosed me with a middle ear infection. now i wonder, can a sticking hammer cause frequent ear infections?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not at all: The hammer, anvil & stirrup are names of the bony structures that transfer vibrations to the nerve that allows us to perceive sounds. In good health they move freely, allowing the system to change while we perceive faint or loud sounds. Sticking decreases that flexibility. Middle ear infections come from germs invading from the throat via the Eustachian tube to eat the mucus made in the middle ear.
