A member asked:

Is it possible to mistake a breast lump for fat necrosis while it actually is a carcinoma? i know clinically it looks like each other but can imaging or biopsy make the right diagnosis?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Breast biopsy can: The 'gold standard" for diagnosing breast cancer is still a breast biopsy of suspicious areas and not "imaging". It is always best to have an actual portion of tissue for the Pathologist to "see" the cancer cells if present.
