A member asked:

Can a gp or physiotherapist refer for me an mri for my knees or can i make an appointment directly? (i am a pharmacist)

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Primary Dr. can help: If a patient already knows for sure which scan she needs, whether or not she can self-refer depends on rules. Usually, a patient does not know which scan (if any) she needs until her doctor or doctors evaluate whatever symptoms she has. A typical sequence is: GP evaluates patient, GP refers patient to specialist, specialist confirms the problem and may order scanning if needed.
