Cough: Top causes for cough in a toddler would be GERD, allergies or some degree of URI. Little ones have little airways so it does not take much to get them coughing. If the child is otherwise eating and developing well I would encourage lots of clear fulids and try some regular nasal saline flush.

?irritants?: The first months are troubled by narrow nasal passages & exposure to dust, fragrances, smoke & other irritants.Baby tries to flush these out of the nose with mucous but this often ends as congestion &cough & produces rattling with breathing. The best rx is washing out the nose with saline & suctioning the remainder. Eliminate irritants from babies environment & this will happen less.
