The basics: The ESR is a very non- specific test. Scientists realized by 1920 that red blood cells dropped faster (dropped like sediment in a lake) during illness. It was later quantified using tubes as a rate per hour. The faster it dropped the more inflammatory material weighed down the cells. The test does not expose the site or reason for inflammation, just that it is present. It can be elevated in UTI.
