Yes: Trauma to the lateral (outside) ankle from running on uneven surfaces, loose fitting skates, or rapid direction changes like in soccer where there is forced inversion of the foot (rolling) can cause rupture of the fibrous band that hold these two tendons in place behind the end of the tibia. These two muscles are in the lateral compartment. Bleeding and swelling can cause compartment syndrome
