A member asked:

My friend has a persistent, reoccurring dry cough and coughing medicine only makes it worse, her nose is blocked, chemist options?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Hard to say: Recurrent dry cough is a non-specific symptom. Many cough meds increase the thickness of mucus secretions which can make things worse. There is a variant of mild asthma called cough variant asthma that would improve with asthma meds but may worsen with cough meds. Exam & review of history is required to sort this out.
