Try a decongestant: It can be quite common to have a post-nasal drip which causes a dry persistent cough (sometimes it can be productive also) which is very irritating. This is caused by mucous dripping down the back of the throat and irritating the vocal cords. It is often worse at night. Try a nasal decongestant for a few days and then if no better make an appointment to see your GP.

Cough: could be viral cough or may be associated with hay fever, if you have had it before. get a review by your GP as hay fever may benefit from antihistamines.
