A 91-year-old female asked:

Mom discharged friday, severe urinary tract infection, she battle to swallow liquids, use nutilis to thicken it but it seems that it lands in lungs, it sounds if she is aspirating again, do we have to take her back to hospital for feeding tube,?

Dr. Donald Colantino
Internal Medicine 61 years experience
Yes: A speech pathologist or therapist should evaluate her to determine whether a feeding tube is advisable. Thickening liquids, chin tuck when swallowing are among the measures that will be tried and evaluated by the therapist.
