"period at age 56": The average age of true menopause is 54, but some women menstruate longer. If the bleeding is an isolated event, with months or years prior with no bleeding, this may be simply variation in estrogen levels, with withdrawal bleeding when the level drops below the previously sustained level. See your gyn for an exam and pelvic ultrasound to evaluate this bleeding.
