Oral herpes?: Herpes I and II are very contagious but symptoms a "day after exposure" may occur from previous contact, not the current one. Stress, either emotional or job related, etc., may cause coincidental activation of latent herpes virus, causing a painful oral ulcer, which would have appeared in any case after your "recent contact", but not because of this contact.
