Why do doctors prescribe antibiotics for colds and flu? i thought antibiotics are ineffective for colds.

Several reasons: You are exactly right. There are many reasons for antibiotic over-use by doctors. Often it's the patient who insists, and it may be quicker to just write a prescription than talk the patient out of it. The doc may not to take the chance of not giving antibiotic for the one patient in 10 or 20 who might need it. And some simply don't understand about causes of cold or influenza symptoms.
