A member asked:

Given a thrombosis does ischemia occur both upstream and downstream of the clot?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Definitions: Ischemia is a term used to describe cellular level changes that occur as a result of poor oxygenation, which can occur because of a thrombosis in an artery or, less commonly, a vein. Because a cell is "downstream" along an artery, thrombosis of an artery will cause ischemia downstream but not "upstream, " back towards the heart.
