A member asked:

Prescribed valtrex for shingles. is this taken long term or just until symptoms end? is a shingles vaccine a better option?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Some basics: Valtrex is an antiviral that works to reduce the activity of the shingles virus when it emerges. Once you have improved enough that it does not bother you the med can be stopped. The shingles vaccine does nothing to treat an outbreak. If taken months/years before your body might have shingles the vaccine can stop it from emerging.
