A member asked:

Which lab test would a gp commonly use in the uk for testing for diabetes in people who are thalassemia minor carriers?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No difference: Same tests as everyone else (blood glucose, HbA1c). Thalassemia is likely the most common one-gene mutation in the world. An estimated 20-25 million people are Thal. carriers (about 1/1000 in low-risk peoples; about 1/30 in high-risk peoples). Low risk: Japanese, Korean, North European, Native American. High risk: Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, South Asian, South-East Asian, Caribbean.
