A member asked:

Why should you not give steroid eye drops to babies? can a drop like tobradex cause long term damage to a 4 month old infant?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

See article: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/pmc249630. Steroid drops in appropriate cases may be helpful. When used without verifying the infectious agent, it has risk. It suppresses the natural tissue response to infection. If the agent is a virus called herpes simplex it can allow permanent scarring of the cornea. Fungal & bacterial agents could flourish & simple virus shedding could be prolonged 3 wks.
