A member asked:

What happens to the brain during mitral valve surgery? what about people with tbi? post-cardiac delirium, is that possible at age 35???

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Brain injury: Youth is no guarantee that complications during mitral valve surgery won't cause brain damage. Mitral fragments can break off and travel to the brain, A decrease in oxygenation, anesthesia misadventures, profound blood pressure changes or certain cardiac dysrhythmias during surgery can cause brain injury also. Fortunately in good hands these complications are rare.
