Cardiomyopathy: Alcohol is not likely to directly effect a repaired valve. However, heavy alcohol usage can cause alcoholic cardiomyopathy. This toxic effect injures the heart muscle, diminishes the muscle function, and dilates the heart. Dilation of the heart causes valves to leak. Can : Alcohol can cause dilated cardiomyopathy with dilated heart and can cause anular dilatation and can cause mitral regurgitation. Once yoy recover from surgery, if your valve looks good with no leak can have social 1 glass of wine couple of times a week, if you are cleared by your cardiologist.

Yes: Alcohol in moderation (1-2 standard drinks per day) has an extremely low chance of causing valve failure.
