Nephrologist: Treatment of vit d deficiency in the presence of abnormally low vit d levels requires serial vit d levels to judge the appropriate dose and,in my opinion, the attending nephrologist is best qualified to to this. Vit d doses for vit d deficiency in patients without chronic kidney disease tend to be lower and I note that nephrologists may prescribe 1200 units as a starting dose for some patients.
