Where in the ankle?: Depending on the location of the origin of the pain it may be caused by different things. When pain travels up the leg as you have described often the cause is from a nerve that is being compressed and irritated. When the nerve is irritated as such, the pain travels along the course of the nerve. Other cause may be from loss of blood circulation or over extending a tendon.
