Depends on cause: There are many different causes of low back pain but in most cases the best answer is to not take something but to do something. I advise seeing a Dr. to evaluate but in most cases physical therapy helps; your Dr. can prescribe that. Seeing a good chiropractor or osteopath often helps, as can acupuncture. If you're deficient in magnesium (common, esp. if spasms) taking magnesium taurate can help.

Varies: Short term episodes of back pain can potentially have a favorable natural history and things like rest, time, medications such as NSAIDs, moist heat can help. If pain not relieved or develop pain or numbness down the leg or any associated bowel or bladder problems, consider being seen.
