Depends: If the skin were cleaned thoroughly, immediately after injury and the ointment applied after cleaning, it would reduce risk of infection. However, if there is color change in the wound and or drainage, the process has passed the simple fix stage. He needs to have the injury evaluated for more aggressive treatment before this turns into blood poisoning.
