Would it be ok to put a false nail ontop of a bruised fingernail. or might it take the whole nail off?

May promote fungus: Depending on the degree of damage the false nail will trap bacteria and fungi which can lead to infection. If it temporary for a special occasion it is ok but for a period of months it may not be the best idea. File nail if possible and cover with polish to hide bruise.
