Varenicline: Varenicline (Champix/ Chantix) will require a prescription. I can't speak for all doctors but I would assume a significant percentage of general practice providers would. There are also non-pharmacological approaches to smoking cessation. I am a psychiatrist & can tell you that I am very concerned about patients with mood disorders who take Chantix. Some of my patients became suicidal or homicida
