Normally, during the stage of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep you are not conscious. The muscles during this stage lose tone (atonia). So the person experiencing sleep paralysis is now conscious to experience this loss of muscle tone. The short, transient paralysis is temporary, but very frightening. And visual hallucinations can occur at this time. High anxiety should be investigated/controlled
