Diuretics, such as : spironolactone, cause the body to excrete more fluid, so there is less fluid available to liquefy secretions, or, as you put it, mucus is thicker. This can interfere with lung conditions like asthma that cause mucus production. Be sure to drink 8 glasses of fluid. Please discuss your side effects with your doctor. It may be helpful to use a nebulizer with saline to help moisten your secretions
