Hands.,..: Typically, an upper respiratory infection occurs after the bacteria or virus gets on your hand and then you touch your eyes/nose/mouth. The bacteria or virus then multiplies until you develop symptoms of infection. This is the reason that frequent hand washing helps to decrease the infection rate. A cough due to infection is transmitted the same way.
