A member asked:

My husband was in an induced coma after a tbi for just over 6 weeks. he had a tube down his throat & tracheaotomy. now thyriod problem connection?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Intubation: The trachea intubation shouldn't affect the thyroid gland, but it could be injured during a percutaneous tracheostomy. If so, I would expect later onset of underactive thyroid if enough thyroid tissue was damaged. This would be an unusual event in my opinion, but I would be interested in the thyroidologist's opinion about this.
