Barretts to Cancer: In very serious cases, untreated GERD (and subsequent Barrett's esophagus) can lead to cancer of the esophagus . The main risk factors are smoking, drinking alcohol, poor diet, and chronic reflux disease ... But if you have a hiatal hernia, acid can move up into your esophagus and cause symptoms. The risk was proportionate to how long and how often these drugs, PPI are being taken.
