A doctor has provided 1 answer

The basics: Your lung tissue is designed to deal with air and the occasional air pollutant. Minor intake of smoke particles or dust will be removed gradually by an internal cleaning mechanism. When you smoke anything, the dirty byproducts of that material end up overwhelming the cleanup mechanism & eventually change the lung tissue. Lung cancer is a well known condition, asbestosis, miners black lung, etc.
