Yes: Any diagnosis could be wrong. However, HSV 1 is seldom misdiagnosed. Cold sores are common and easily recognized. Antibody tests to HSV 1 are specific for the virus. If needed, virus could be analysed by its DNA or culture. If two methods concur the incidence of wrong diagnosis would be vanishly rare.
