Probably not.: If you have "true" migraines, then the best anyone can achieve is control of the symptoms...Reduce the frequency and/or the intensity of the pain and symptoms. Since most headaches are not migraines, even though severe, there may be treatments available to help the pain further. Have your doctor look into your neck for possible answers.

No: It can be controlled. Spontaneous remission can occur which may seem like cure.

Depends: If you have a constellation of trigger points, and Botox injections cease your migraines, then you may be a candidate for nerve decompression surgery. Cure rates in properly selected patients is nearly 50%, and 85-90% of patients will see a significant reduction in their symptoms. See a board-certified plastic surgeon with experience in migraine surgery for more information.

No: About 35 million people in the us have migraine per year but we have nothing that approaches a cure. There are medications that may help to treat individual attacks and meds to prevent attacks when frequent. More money needs to be spent on research. The us federal government is only spending about $13 million/yr on migraine research. Contact your congressman!

Prevent them: There are certain foods and aspects of lifestyle that can trigger or worsen headaches and migraines. The best way to identify triggers is to maintain a headache diary and keep a list of foods eaten before your migraine. Common triggers include chocolate, caffeine, cheese, msg, processed meats, alcohol, smoking/being around smoke, stress, skipping meals, lack of sleep or too much sleep.

No: Migraines occur in people who are genetically predisposed. Migraines can be treated with medications such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, tryptans, and ergotamines. Migraines can be prevented with several different medications with variable results in different individuals. There is currently no known cure for migraines. Depends: Migraines are usually due to some aggravating factor in most people. A lot of people as they grow older stop having migraines. If you have very specific triggers for migraines, then avoiding them can keep the migraines at bay. Based on the triggers, if you can cure the trigger then migraine can be cured but for most people they tend to grow out of it.

Great question: Migraine is genetic problem with unstable neurotransmitters susceptible to multiple triggers. We have excellent preventatives, and understand underlying mechanisms. The cure lies in restoring appropriate balance in brain chemicals and maintaining such--something at this point in its infancy. But keep faith, as I suspect a medical food will emerge in future (see Petadolex)
