Injury: If there was truly no prior injury, the pain could be due to gout, or pseudogout (both metabolic conditions). But many people don’t recall how or when they sprained their ankle bc it was a mild sprain at the time that hurt more later. If pain continues, I’d recommend getting an X-ray and evaluation from an urgent care center or better yet a board certified orthopedic specialist.
