How long?: You may have a viral infection, that may affect one side more than the other and may start on one side before affecting the other.

Germs: The presence or absence of tonsils does not prevent the remaining tissues from infection by viruses, Strep A or other germs. Removal might reduce the intensity of any infection but the process remains the same. A visit to check for strep or if one sides a throat abscess would be wise.
