Poor oral hygiene: Poor oral hygiene, lack of brushing and flossing, and neglecting to go in for dental checkups and cleanings can lead to gingivitis, gum disease, and abscessed gums. It is also possible to get food or other foreign body wedged into the gum tissue. This is common around erupting wisdom teeth. Even in a healthy mouth, if not removed this can lead to abscess.

Acute infection: Most gum disease tends to be a chronic, low grade infection. If activity in one site increases due to changes in the local environment, you can get an abscess. Changes in that area may include a foreign body stuck in the gum or such a large buildup of plaque that your body reacts against.

Many reasons!: Abscesses are basically bacterial infections in the bone and gum tissue. If you have a deep cavity that exposes the nerve in a tooth you can get an abscess from an infection in the nerve. If you have bone loss around a tooth you can possibly develop an abscess due to an infection in the gum tissue.
