Some basics: There are 2 strains of herpes simplex virus which you can acquire. Unfortunately HSV 1 & 2 can be responsible for both cold sores and genital herpes. Both can pass through direct contact, surface to surface. If you had a single strain as a cold sore it may confer some immunity to genital exposure to that strain later. However, since there is another strain you could still acquire genital herpes.
