Neurological damage: Anterior disc displacement of the TMJ can lead to neurological symptoms. With displacement of TMJ the jaw muscles frequently begin to function under stress. This stress can produce excess forces applied to other anatomical structures, such as nerve tissue. The muscles can produce stretching or straining of associated nerves. This can yield neurological inflammation and symptoms.
