Varies: The germs are usually all killed by the end of antibiotic treatment. For it to be there to begin with there is mucus retained behind the ear drum which contains germs and pus cells. This must liquefy and drain from the middle ear which can take weeks. Hearing is usually muffled until the mucous is gone and air returns to the middle ear space.
