R/O thumb fx : Traumatic swelling at the base of the thumb that does not resolve rapidly or within the week makes us think more strongly about potential for a fracture. If radiographs were not obtained,, xrays may now be indicated. An MRI will also add more information regarding the important stabilizing ligaments around the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint ( the big “knuckle” of the thumb)
