May be tendonitis: In most cases you would recall a sprain, but with the intermittent symptoms you are describing it may be that you are suffering from tendonitis. May people today suffer from tendonitis around the thumb from overuse (i.e. Smart phone use). Start your treatment with rice, and see a physician if symptoms don't subside. You may benefit from ot or a custom splint.
